2016 School of Media and Design

3rd Cultural Economy International Summer School

Overview

Cultural Economy International Summer School is a creative graduate education project organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Monash University. It aims at upgrading graduate teaching and training quality, enhancing students’ academic know-how and research competence, promoting international collaboration among students and faculties, and expanding international vision of postgraduate programs. This project is founded in 2014. It is well recognized home and overseas.

The 3rd Cultural Economy International Summer School has “Cultural Economy, City and Media” as the theme. Re-visiting concept of culture led urban gentrification in Shanghai, we explore the types of urban spaces key to process of developing cultural economy. From blockbuster projects like the museums and art galleries in the CBD to quirky places such as co-working and hacker space, we are interested in the diverse answers to the question of culture as development. Some of the challenges and opportunities will be examined. In addition to this, we aim to explore the relationship between media and the city. This includes the types of spaces where media production takes place; the role of media representation; and the configuration of ‘public sphere’ for the cultural imaginary of Shanghai since the late 20th Century.  These questions will be discussed within a wider historical and theoretical context by leading international experts in the field.

Of equal importance will be meeting creative professionals working both inside and outside these official cultural programs. What lessons can we draw from the evolution of the Shanghai Creative Industries Development Model - the ‘creative clusters’ – what have gone wrong? What have succeeded? The complexity in governing and sustaining the urban cultural economy in Shanghai – for example, how can we balance the role of cultural production and consumption in the city through controlling rents? Can these development models be compared to the ‘West’? We try to answer this by exploring the role of ‘media’ – the production of media/media industry; the independent production and the state run media industries; the consumption of media as it is immersed in urban spaces.  The students will also speak to local policy makers and experts about these issues, as well as actually visiting cultural sites involved.

This summer school will again link up local students with Monash (Melbourne, Australia) students from the Master of Cultural Economy, along with international staff and local guest lecturers. Alongside a comprehensive programme of lectures we will guest presenters from the local cultural sector and guided field trips and supervised field work in the cultural economy of Shanghai.
